Meet up and make a mark

There's a certain excitement and anticipation about going out on that all important first date with that boy or girl of your dreams. And making that killer first impression takes precedence over everything else. However, it is this very anticipation that can result in one making mistakes that may be cliched, but the one that could possibly end up putting off a potential partner for good. Don't fall prey to making this fatal error. More than anything else, stay calm, don't let the nervousness get the better of you .

Here are some things you need to take care of:
1. Don't interview: Yes, you have all those questions in your head that you want to ask your date, but remember, you're on a date. Apart from a few standard questions like those about his/her family, job and hobbies, don't let your date feel like they are facing a firing squad. Some good conversation topics include current affairs, favourite movies, music or books, food and the like. From here you can let the conversation veer off to a more personal and intimate one.

2. Don't complain: No one likes a grumbler, especially if your mission is to make a first impression that your date will not forget. So, no matter how bad your day has been or how bad your work or your boss is, these are not first date conversation topics. Instead, focus on positive things. Talk about happy experiences like a great eatery that you may have stumbled upon or your favourite movie that still makes you laugh or some funny incident or TV show you may have watched. Remember, people are easily attracted to those who see things positively versus ones who feel the need to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders.

3. Stay focussed on your date: Cell phones may have made life a lot simpler but when it comes to dates, they can be the cause of mess-ups. Nothing puts people off faster than a person who is constantly distracted. Hence, answering every phone call you get, checking every single SMS ! or even just checking your phone for missed calls every five minutes is a sign that you do not care about the person you are with and more importantly, that you can't focus or connect. No one likes to compete for another person's attention, especially not with a gadget.

4. Don't be rude or crass: Ok, so the waiter messed up your order or that annoying kid somehow managed to drop ketchup on your shoes. Take a deep breath and remember, accidents happen and the person you are with is paying attention to how you react to situations like these. Shouting, reprimanding or cursing is a sign that you lack consideration for the feelings of those around you. Instead, request your date for a change in venue to a quieter and less crowded spot or venue.

5. Don't be stingy: Gone are the days when it was almost mandatory for the guy to pick up the tab. Today, most women are comfortable with the idea of splitting the bill. So, if you don't want to foot the entire bill yourself, instead of dilly-dallying, just be forthright and suggest an equal split.
