'I'm so embarrassed': Diane Von Furstenberg backtracks over criticism of Michelle Obama's Alexander McQueen dress

Backtrack: Diane von Furstenberg says she is 'embarrassed' about comments made about Michelle Obama's dressDiane Von Furstenberg caused a stir last month when she slammed Michelle Obama for wearing Alexander McQueen to a State Dinner, rather than a dress by an American label.
Now the veteran designer, who is president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, has admitted that she is embarrassed about the comments she made, and called the U.S. First Lady 'super-supportive of American designers'.In an interview with journalist Tina Brown, she explained: 'I said that Mrs Obama has been extremely supportive of American designers, but clearly we were disappointed that she chose to wear a British designer for the state dinner.'From there, I was so embarrassed that I am definitely going to write to her. She has been super-supportive to American designers.'When asked to speculate why Mrs Obama might have chosen a dress by a foreign designer, she replied: 'I dont know.'Maybe she liked the colour! Im sure she had options like all of us. Or she asked [President Obama], "Which one do you like?"'Ms Von Furstenberg, who is most famous for creating the iconic wrap dress in the Seventies, was promoting her annual DVF Awards, given out to empower women.
Last month she joined comedienne Joan Rivers and designer Oscar de la Renta in criticising Michelle Obama for failing to promote American designers.She told industry title WWD at the time: 'Our First Lady Michelle Obama has been wonderful at promoting our designers, so we were surprised and a little disappointed not to be represented for this major state dinner.'

De la Renta, told the same publication: 'My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade. American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?'And Ms Rivers called Mrs Obama's McQueen gown 'badly advised and wrong'.

Critical: Comedienne Joan Rivers and designer Oscar de la Renta also found fault with the First Lady's choice of dress last monthMrs Obama defended her choice though, insisting that she will continue to dress in the clothes that make her comfortable - regardless of the label.In an interview with Good Morning America, the First Lady said: 'Look, women, wear what you love.'That's all I can say. That's my motto. I wear what I like because...I gotta be in the dress, so...'
