Most Americans would opt for the former, MSNBC reports.
In a new Gallup poll asking whether folks would want a boy or a girl if they could have just one child, 40 percent chose a boy, 28 percent opted for a girl and 32 percent said they'd take either sex, according to the network.
The answer to the poll hasn't changed much since Gallup asked the question in 1941, MSNBC reports. The question, actually, has been posed 10 times since then and boys always win out.
Let's break it down further:
- Forty-nine percent of men wanted a boy; 22 percent wanted a girl.
- Thirty-one percent of women had no preference, 31 percent wanted a boy and 32 percent wanted a girl.
- Fifty-four percent of those younger than 30 wanted a boy; 27 percent wanted a girl.
- More people with a high school-only education wanted a boy.
- Republicans wanted boys more often than Democrats.
