Duchess of Cambridge and Alexander McQueen make London the world's fashion capital

Add to My Stories Share London has overtaken New York in a list of the world's fashion capitals, knocking the U.S. city off the top spot for the first time in several years.It also beat Paris, Milan and Los Angeles in the study by Global Language Monitor, which tracks trends in print and social media.The organisation found that that London had shifted from third place to first in the past year alone.

The Duchess, who developed a reputation as a trendsetter inthe run-up to the Royal Wedding in April, chose Sarah Burton, the late designer's protegee, now artistic director for the label, to make her wedding gown.Bekka Payack, fashion correspondent for the Texas-based organisation, said:'We are seeing what the impact of two genuine media stars... Kate [Middleton] and Alexander McQueen can have upon a global ranking.

Influence: The tragic suicide of late fashion designer Alexander McQueen also contributed to London's prominent ranking 'Our numbers show that it was their presence that tipped the victory to London over New York.'Several industry experts believe that the end of ! the Sex and the City era, after a slow decline since the TV series ended in 2004, has also contributed to New York's fall in the global ranking.
The top five fashion capitals were rounded out by Paris, which came third, followed by Milan and Los Angeles.The survey also showed the growing impact on the fashion world of Berlin, which placed 10th and Singapore (8th), which beat Tokyo, traditionally the region's most significant style hub.
