Babas, baccha bands & qawwals!

Music's the latest fodder for fashion. On the runway, are Baul singers dancing and singing with their tanpuras, kiddie bands playing the drums and inviting the audience to join in and Qawwals, who's voice reverberates aloud leaving everyone mesmerised. The overall experience is amazing. Good news is that it's now a trend that's setting in and fashionistas are truly loving it.

Tarun's Qawwals:
Designer Tarun Tahiliani who recently showcased his summer collection amidst a live setting of Qawwals, says, "Aren't we all tired of recorded music on the ramps? My collection was with a mix of malmal and khadi, thus the music had to be Indian. Music creates the right ambience for any show. I wanted to make mine different by going ahead with Qawwals and that too, live."

Babita's Baul connect:
For designer Babita Malkani, a short visit to West Bengal to meet the Baul singers presented a different perspective in life. "The Bauls are free, spiritual and happy. On the fashion ramp at Mumbai Fashion Week, my summer collection was about freedom and love. I did my job with clothes and the Bauls conveyed my message with their songs. The audience just loved the feel," she says.

Krishna Mehta's babas:
Designer Krishna Mehta adds, "We all know that live music is infectious and can instantly fill the entire venue with vibrant energy. I chose singer Bikramjit to sing for me with a sadhu in saffron drapes blowing the conch shell right on the ramp, so that everyone's alert and infused with energy. Everyone broke into a jig that moment at the fashion show."

Neeta Lulla's casanova:
For Neeta, music is defined by the mood of her fashion show. "And since my collection celebrated the beauty of women, the designs were flowy and flirty. I chose a saxophone player to serenade the models on the ramp. The fun element was evident on the ramp. And the recall value of the show is still high," claims Neeta

Sallu ka bachcha band: !
Las t year, Salman Khan's Being Human show was so high on decibel levels that no one in the audience could sit still. People sang and clapped as the kiddie band played the drums and actors and models walked in clothes, which bore prints of the actor's paintings. Salman, of course, was very happy with the response of his show.

As Shakespeare said - If music be the food of love, play on.
