Kate Middleton: Calvin Klein wants to dress 'all-American' Duchess of Cambridge

Even before the ink had dried on Catherine and William's wedding certificate, the young Duchess's fashion stock was on the rise.

From her Alexander McQueen wedding gown (now worth a reported 1m) to her every subsequent sartorial choice, Catherine's impact on the fashion world has increased infinitely, with everything she wears selling out in seconds.

So, then, it will come as no surprise to hear that the world's top fashion labels are clamouring to dress the Duchess.

All-American girl: She's very Calvin', says Calvin Klein's creative director Francisco Costa, left, of the young Duchess, right

The latest to declare his intent is Francisco Costa, design head at U.S. label Calvin Klein.

In a recent interview, Costa said he would like to work with Catherine, believing her to have all the potential to become a 'style icon'.

And despite her British breeding, Costa says he believes the Duchess looked like an 'All-American girl.'

'She's very Calvin, when you think about it,' Costa told the Telegraph.

'She's athletic looking, with great teeth and amazing hair. In many ways she looks like an all American Girl.'

So, yes, I'm putting it out there: I'd love to dress her.'

Of course, if Catherine were to endorse Calvin Klein by wearing their clothes, it could amount to huge financial gain for the company.

It has been estimated that the boost given to Alexander McQueen by Kate's choice of wedding gown was worth over a 1m - a conservative estimate when one considers that Illuminum, the company that made Kate's White Gardenia Petals wedding perfume, are themselves reported to have benefited from the Kate effect to the tune of 1m.

And L.K. Bennett, the accessories brand behind Catherine's now-trademark nude pumps, has seen such an increase in turnover since the royal wedding that it has been able to open multiple shops in the States, where the so-called Kate Effect is as powerful, if not more so, than it is in the UK.

Given the financial clout of her fashion choices then, how likely is it that Catherine would pay heed to Costa's come on?

Catherine prefers to honour British labels with her patronage - especially when she is on official duties on home turf - but she does wear brands from international fashion houses should the occasion demand.

For her royal tour of Canada, Kate cleverly chose a mix of Canadian and British brands - her first outfit in her host country was a blue lace dress by Canadian-born, London-based brand Erdem, for instance.

Given how carefully she crafts her wardrobe then, it is not entirely unlikely that she could one day choose to wear Calvin Klein, should the occasion demand.

She could choose the designer for an event hosted by Americans, on any potential trip to the U.S. by the royal couple or, indeed, in an unofficial capacity at a private event.

For now though, Mr Francisco Costa will have to get to the back of the queue.
