Perfume in a pill? 'Swallowable fragrance' capsule promises to turn sweat into scent

Pills for insomnia, pills for pain, pills for stress: They're all two-to-a-penny.

But a new capsule promises to deliver perfume directly into the body, turning the skin into an 'atomiser.'

Swallowable Parfum, currently in its development phase, is said to work with the natural processes of metabolism, releasing fragrant molecules through the skin's surface during perspiration.

Essentially, the pill claims to turn perspiration into a fragrance - and because we are all genetically unique, our scented sweat will take on an individual characteristic, too.

The artist behind the unlikely idea is Netherlands-based Lucy McCrae. She writes on her site: 'Swallowable Parfum is a digestible scented capsule that emits a unique odor through your own perspiration.'

Teaming up with synthetic biologist Sheref Mansy, the couple hope the pill will create a 'biologically enhanced second skin synthesized directly from the natural processes of the body.'

A promotional video for the product is accompanied by strange, if a little off-putting, sound-effects and oddly globular visuals.


The futuristic potential solution to odour issues - or simply for those who are too lazy to squirt a spritz of perfume each morning - comes on the heels of a new 'perfume candy' that mimicks the staying power of garlic, replacing its antisocial breath odour with something altogether more attractive.

Elsewhere, research is underway for a pill that will provide SPF - negating the need for suncream - and tablets to counteract grey hair are slated to be launched by L'Oreal in 2015.


The magical-sounding perfume tablets are still very much on the drawing board, with no product launch date yet planned.
