Nichole de Carle 232 knickers with diamond go on sale at Selfridges

In these lean times, it's difficult for shoppers to justify unnecessary excess.

But if you're a luxury brand loved by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Nicole Scherzinger and Cheryl Cole of course, the usual rules do not apply.

With that in mind, high end British lingerie design house Nichole de Carle - who have created bespoke stage costumes for both Scherzinger and Cole, as well as Alexandra Burke - has designed a pair of ivory silk knickers that boast a 0.10ct brilliant cut diamond set in a solid silver charm.

The luxury lingerie, to go on sale at Selfridges as part of the department store's annual white-themed Christmas gift room at the end of this month, will set the buyer back a staggering 232.

But while the average shopper might find the price tag prohibitive, Selfridges say that in the current climate investing in such a garment could prove wise.

Diamonds have seen their value rise 27 per cent since last year and alongside gold are seen as one of the most reliable forms of investment in the recession.

And, they say, as people look to source alternative forms of investment for the future, the knickers form a practical solution quite apart from their indulgent appeal.

Crucially, the ethically sourced Coster diamond is fully detachable so can be kept safe when required.

Selfridges' Lingerie Buyer Manager Helen Attwood said: 'Lingerie doesnt get more luxurious then being offered with its own certified diamond.

We are thrilled to offer our customers this exclusive style which is anticipated to be a big hit this Christmas.'

A final word of warning? Watch out for magpies when hanging them out to dry.
