How dated bootcut style jeans are STILL beating sales of skinny and flared denim

With the A-list falling into two distinct denim camps, one would imagine that we would all follow suit.

But according to new research, it is neither skinny jeans nor flares that top the list when it comes to the buying public.

An infographic released by eBay today shows that sales of the classic bootcut jean far exceed sales of any other style - no matter how fashionable.

Classic cut: eBay's infographic shows that sales of bootcut jeans far exceed sales of any other style - no matter how fashionable

Among the 3million pairs of jeans purchased in the U.S. on the online auction site over the past year, 793,289 pairs were bootcut - over three times more than the next best-selling style.

Straight leg (215,353 pairs sold) and skinny jeans (214,405), which are typically more favoured by the style set, took second and third place respectively, but denim leggings, or 'jeggings', the latest style to hit the market, came in tenth place with just 11,616 pairs sold.

Flares, which have made a comeback over the past year, thanks to the fashion trend for all things Seventies, came in fourth place with 197,790 p! airs pur chased by eBay users.

Low-rise waistbands, which have waned in popularity since the return of high-waists to the fashion spotlight, took the fifth spot, beating beat boyfriend jeans, which came eighth with just 30,438 pairs sold.

A cut above: Katie Holmes (far left), like many U.S. women, is a fan of the bootcut jean. But when it comes to fashion, Sarah Jessica Parker's straight-leg style (second left), Sofia Vergara's skinny-leg denims (second from right) and Kim kardashian's flares (far right), are far more on trend

eBay Fashion Creative Director, Andrea Linett, told MailOnline that the popularity of the bootcut is down to the fact that it can be worn at any age, and flatters most body shapes, particularly those with wider hips.

She said: 'Specific jean styles come and go all the time, but women will always love their bootcut jeans.

'They're classic, all age-appropriateand are the most forgiving of all styles - especially if you're a bit hippy. The wider hem balances everything out.'
