When Lady Gaga announced the holiday take-over of one of the world's most famous department stores, shoppers, fashion commentators and fans could only begin to imagine what the outlandish pop star had in mind.

Monster-like creatures, it turns out.

Barney's today revealed that shoppers entering the its flagship New York store during the Christmas period will walk through the mouth of a 'giant monster-like creature' inspired by the Born This Way Star's less-than-predictable style.

Festive madness: Lady Gaga, pictured at the MTV Europe Awards, is taking over a level of Barney's New York, designing its look and filling its shelves

The transformed entrance, leading to Gaga's Workshop, is one just of the festive changes to the usually sedate, high-end store.

Its famous Madison Avenue windows will be morphed into a collage of music, fashion, astrology and the elements.

Gaga is joined by stylist Nicola Formichetti, Eli Sudbrack and Christophe Hamaide Pierson for the overhaul of the space, which is a take on a Santa's grotto.

She and her team will decorate an! d fill t he entire fifth floor, a massive 5,550 square feet, with products - many of which seem to be an ode to the songstress and performer.

Giant wig: A boudoir selling candles and cosmetics will languish inside a giant wig - promotional art for the project shows a characteristically eccentric Gaga

$15 cookies featuring the star's image in frosting will be on sale alongside candy, toys, apparel, accessories, holiday collectables and a media library within the grotto's eight mini stores.

Candles and cosmetics will be on sale in a 'boudoir' area, which will mimic one of the giant wigs of which Gaga is so fond.

A jewellery store will be carved from none other than a giant spider.

Judging by promotional art for the project, colourful, outlandish fashions will be part of the visual feast.

A blue-haired cartoon version of Gaga is seen with long, curling fingernails, a glittering red bodysuit and her trademark heel-less Noritaka Tatehana shoes.
